Under the action of ultrasonic energy, two or more immiscible liquids are mixed together, and one of the liquids is uniformly dispersed in the other to form an emulsion-like liquid. This process is called ultrasonic emulsification.
A wide variety of intermediates and consumer products such as cosmetics and skin care products, pharmaceutical pastes, paints, lubricants and fuels are either complete or partial emulsions. Emulsions exist in every aspect of life, and understanding how to control and optimize performance is critical to producing a high-quality product, defined as fit for the final application.
Ultrasound creates alternating high and low pressures in the exposed liquid. During the low-pressure cycle, the ultrasonic wave generates small vacuum bubbles in the liquid, and the vacuum bubbles are violently ruptured during the high-pressure cycle, which is called cavitation. The implosion of cavitation bubbles causes strong hydrodynamic shear forces. The shear force can make the reactants mix well and shorten the reaction time.
