All sounds beyond the human hearing range are called ultrasound. Standardly the human hearing threshold is set at 18 kHz. An ultrasonic vibration is used as an energy carrier. The energy is converted by the converter (vibrating element) of an electrical wave into a mechanical vibration. Since air forms a high resistance to noise vibration and energy follows the path of least resistance, the energy will move in the direction of the sonotrode.
The sonotrode is a tool adapted to a maximum contact surface with the product. At this point the energy again follows the path of least resistance and continues into the product.
Energy transfer
A weld structure is fitted on the product. This weld seam construction is basically, a tapering (barrier) of the surface for the energy flow. A barrier means resistance, resistance means heat. When the resistance is large enough, the heat generation will be large enough to achieve the melting point of the plastic. The result is a melt at the point where a pre-weld construction is made. As soon as a melt is created, the surface and the absorption of the energy will increase; the resistance to the wave reduces. The melting process stops. As a result, the temperature doesn't rise further; burning is prevented. In order to generate the required vibrations an ultrasonic welding machine is required. This machine consists of several components (see figure).
Ultrasonic Converters and Ultrasonic Transducers are one in the same. There is one Ultrasonic OEM, Dukane Corporation, that uses the term Transducer. All of the other ultrasonic OEM manufactures such as Branson, Sonics and Materials, Rinco, Telesonics and Herrmann refer to these as Converters or Konverters.Cut off by ultrasound makes the angle very evidently and pretty. Sealing of lid films, welding of seal rings and embedding of filters are the most important applications for which ultrasonic welding provides a solution. The weld tools hold the film in place by means of vacuum. Shelf life and product protection are ensured due to the tools being cold.
With ultrasonics, fast and safe welding of injection molded degassing valves or spouts on films of any type is possible. Film shrinkage is prevented and the barrier properties are not jeopardized since ultrasonics only excites the molecules in the actual sealing layer. Moreover, ultrasonics allows for safe integration of zippers for re-sealable pouches and welding of the zipper ends (zipper-crushing).
With ultrasonics it is possible to safely push product residues out of the seal area, which ensures absolutely tight sealing. This significantly reduces the number of leaking packaging and shelf life of the products in the supermarkets is increased. Ultrasonics provides this advantage for stand-up pouches, chained bags and bags, both at longitudinal and transverse joints, in intermittent and continuous applications
Ultrasonic welding is very well suited for coated carton packaging material. Despite wetting with filled products, tight seals are ensured with or without aluminum barrier. Integration of spouts is easily possible. High output due to short sealing times. Repeatable parameters ensure consistently high sealing quality.
On PET applications in particular, ultrasonics quickly reaches the high melting point and therefore results in an increase in production output. Sealing and separating blister packs is easily possible, also integration of tear out sections and tamper-evident seals.
